Piet de Klerk is the Special Envoy for Counterterrorism, and works to strengthen the Netherlands’ role in international efforts to fight terrorism while working closely with the relevant agencies in the Netherlands, including the Office of the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV).
Key priorities include the international approach to jihadists and tackling terrorist funding mechanisms.
Mr. De Klerk began his role in the fall of 2014, and immediately visited Washington DC to take part in an international conference on sanctions against ISIS and the Assad regime in Syria.
“A broadly supported package of international sanctions must make funding ISIS even more difficult,” Mr. De Klerk said.
Mr. De Klerk served as the chief negotiator in charge of preparations for the Nuclear Security Summit held in The Hague in March 2014. Before then, he served as Dutch Ambassador to Jordan, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Netherlands at the United Nations in New York and as Human Rights Ambassador.
