Now in its 34th year, the AFI European Union Film Showcase continues its tradition of bringing the best in European cinema to Washington, D.C.-area audiences December 1-19. The AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands proudly present two Dutch films, “Mitra” and “Silence of the Tides.”

About “Mitra” – Decades after her daughter was executed in Iran, Haleh, now living in the Netherlands, still isn’t sure who was responsible. When she meets Leyla, who has just fled Iran, she becomes convinced that Leyla is the one who gave her daughter up to the authorities, and slowly embarks on a carefully plotted revenge. About “Silence of the Tides” – Filmmaker Pieter-Rim de Kroon explores the Wadden Sea, the largest tidal wetlands in the world, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. His poetic film depicts the complex and fragile interrelationships between all creatures living in this unique ecosystem, both in the sea and on the land. Director: Pieter-Rim de Kroon.
