The Maeslant Barrier is among the most iconic storm-surge barriers that make up the Netherlands’ Delta Works. Located in the province of South Holland, the two arms of the barrier are as long as the Eiffel Tower is tall and are among the largest moving structures on Earth.

The arms of the barrier remain open most of the time to allow cargo ships easy access to the Port of Rotterdam. However, in the event of a storm surge, they can close to protect Rotterdam and surrounding areas.
